In the 1890s Stuart was called Potsdam, a name given by Otto Stypmann, who had come from Potsdam, Germany, with his brother Ernest and farmed pineapples on land that is now downtown. When the Florida East Coast Railway reached town, the settlement was renamed for early settler Homer Hine Stuart Jr., and it went on to incorporate in 1914 and become the county seat of the new Martin County in 1925. The city adopted the slogan Sailfish Capital of the World in 1957, and life here still runs along the St. Lucie River, from the Riverwalk boardwalk to the lighted fishing pier at Flagler Park.
