Hobe Sound takes its name from a village of the Jaega people; Spanish mapmakers wrote it as Jobe, and Jonathan Dickinson, shipwrecked nearby in 1696, spelled it Hoe-bey. During the 1920s land boom, the Olympia Improvement Corporation planned a Greek-themed movie town here and briefly renamed it Picture City, and street names like Zeus, Saturn, and Mercury are still on the map. The boom collapsed after the 1928 Okeechobee hurricane, the original name came back, and today the town borders Jonathan Dickinson State Park, home to the Loxahatchee River, Florida's first federally designated Wild and Scenic River.
