Palm City started as a land sale: in 1910, West Palm Beach attorney Charles C. Chillingworth formed the Palm Beach Land Company, bought a large tract on the west side of the St. Lucie River, and sold it in 10-acre parcels he called Palm City Farms. His company dug drainage ditches and built roads between 1912 and 1916, and by the 1920s citrus groves covered hundreds of acres. Palm City is still unincorporated today, a census-designated place governed by Martin County and bounded by Stuart, the South Fork of the St. Lucie River, and Florida's Turnpike.
