Jensen Beach takes its name from John Laurence Jensen, a Danish immigrant who started a pineapple plantation here in 1881, and by 1895 the area was shipping more than a million boxes a season as the Pineapple Capital of the World. A hard freeze that same year and fires in 1908 and 1910 wiped out most of the farms, and growers turned to citrus after the industry collapsed in 1920. Incorporated as Jensen in 1926 and dissolved in 1933, the community became Jensen Beach in 1943, and the 1926 Stuart Welcome Arch on Dixie Highway still marks its old line with Stuart.
