Port St. Lucie started as a developer's plan: in 1958 the General Development Corporation bought 40,000 acres along the North Fork of the St. Lucie River, then opened its first bridge across the river the following year. The state incorporated the city on April 27, 1961, when about 250 homes stood on land that had been a fishing camp and a few farms. By the 2020 census it counted 204,851 residents, sixth-most in Florida, and the Crosstown Parkway, finished in 2019, added a third major crossing of the North Fork between I-95 and US 1.
