Captain Allen W. Estes established the first land patent between the Atlantic and the Indian River Lagoon here in 1872, and Henry Flagler's Florida East Coast Railway began running through the area in 1893. The town of Vero was chartered in 1919 with 71 residents, then renamed Vero Beach in 1925 when it became the seat of the newly formed Indian River County. In 1948 the Brooklyn Dodgers opened Dodgertown on a former World War II Navy site, and the club held spring training there, through its move to Los Angeles, until 2008.
