Fellsmere grew out of E. Nelson Fell's Fellsmere Farms Company, which ran a standard-gauge railroad in from Sebastian in 1910, and the town incorporated the following year. On June 19, 1915, Zena M. Dreier cast a ballot in the city election and became the first woman to legally vote anywhere in the American South, five years before the 19th Amendment made women's suffrage national. The brick Fellsmere Public School, finished in 1916 as the first masonry school building in what is now Indian River County, still stands on South Orange Street and has housed city government since 1982.
