Plantation takes its name from an earlier rice-growing venture, the Everglades Plantation Company, that never panned out on the swampy land west of Fort Lauderdale. St. Louis millionaire Frederick C. Peters bought 10,000 acres here in 1941 with a very different vision, spacious one-acre lots, winding streets, and abundant trees, and even helped develop a sorghum variety called Plantation Pride still used as livestock feed today. The city incorporated on April 30, 1953, with fewer than 500 residents and a total budget of $1,288, holding its first council meeting in a converted feed warehouse.
