Manalapan's story starts in 1889, when President Benjamin Harrison granted homesteader George H.K. Carter a patent on the land. It changed hands several times before Commodore Harold Stirling Vanderbilt left Palm Beach after a dispute over storm-damaged property, bought oceanfront acreage here in 1930, and built his estate Eastover. Vanderbilt chartered the Town of Manalapan the following year, naming it after Manalapan, New Jersey, a Lenape word meaning good land to settle on. That founding vision of a low-density, private enclave still defines the town today.
