A Boston developer first platted this barrier island in 1924, and building contractor Melvin Anglin bought the land soon after with plans for a beachside community, later becoming the town's first mayor. Lauderdale-by-the-Sea incorporated in 1927, lost its charter during the Depression in 1933, and reincorporated for good in 1947. In 1973 the town capped building heights to preserve its ocean views, a rule still in effect today, which is why this stretch of coast still looks like a small beach town instead of a wall of condo towers.
